Student FAQs

What is the purpose of a General Education program?

A General Education (GE) program provides a course of study that prepares students for further study in college (e.g. by supporting students in honing their math, critical thinking, and written and oral communication skills); introduces them to disciplinary knowledge and ways of thinking in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; and provides opportunities for hands-on experience with complex questions and problems.  General Education programs support students in building the broad and multidisciplinary knowledge that they will use in their careers and as citizens of a globally engaged democracy.

I am a currently enrolled student.  Will I need to follow the new GE program?

Current students (students who entered SSU in or before Fall 2018) can finish the GE pattern that was in place when they enrolled in the University, or they can complete the new program.  Consult your advisor about which option would be best for you.
